Cabaret du Ciel : Gianluigi Gian Luigi Morosin, Andrea Desiderà,Giorgio Ricci

The project Cabaret du Ciel started as a solo project by  Gian Luigi Morosin in 1986, multi-instrumentalist with, at the time, many links in the new wave scene of the city of Treviso. Especially with the industrial-dark-ambient scene that was blossoming in town.

The first official release of Cabaret du Ciel was the participation to the compilation 'Enemies of Dolby Vol.1', that came out in 1986 produced by  Gregorsamsa of Guido Lusetti (Correggio - Reggio Emilia). The sound was electro-ambient with some touches of industrial. After this experiment the one-man project focused on abstract sounds made by found objects and looped delay guitar sounds in a surreal way of composing. The two experiments bloomed in 2 tapes : the first homonym, and the second titled  “ Macchina del vento”. The third solo release followed in the 70’s based on an electronic kraut hard psychedelic looped guitar  titled “ Solarisation”. All three were published by Morosin's own tape label “Ionisation tapes”. In 1989 Gian Luigi joins Andrea Desiderà,  bassist of the post-punk band Scent Merci from Treviso , who wanted to experiment with synth.

The duo composed, under the name Cabaret du Ciel,  three tracks for the second volume of the compilation  Treviso Underground Vol 2 celebrating the most interesting part of the new wave of Treviso. The sound is still bound to the ambient but evolves towards electroacoustic  and avant-garde solutions with experimental and cinematic veins.

The duo Cabaret du Ciel performs involving live exhibitions, music is accompanied by projections of  slides with surreal images by photographer Paola Moretto from Venice. Through these original shows, with growing audiences, they acquire a bigger notoriety beginning of the nineties. Most important concerts of this period are the one at  the  Tag of Mestre and at the contest for new bands at the  discoteca Vinile at Bassano del Grappa          (Cabaret Du Ciel participated at the compilation that was the prize for the first 10 groups).

In  1991 Ionisation Tapes of Gian Luigi Russolo released two very good cassettes: "Weather Colours” and “Raintears”.  "Raintears" heads back into the group’s archives and focuses on a limited cassette release from 1991. Originally released on Ionisation Tapes, "Raintears" is described as heralding a new phase for Cabaret du Ciel, following their earlier "Solarisation" and "Weather Colours" cassettes.In 1992  followed "Skies In The Mirror". With these first complete works Cabaret du Ciel strongly bring out their their imaginative experimental sound, result of what had been experimented in former years. In  "Skies In The Mirror" there is also a measured out participation of Giorgio Ricci (also former member of Scent Merci playing at the time in the techno-punk  band Templebeat).In 2018 the French label Hybride sentimento re-printed the tape into a vinyl format.

During those years the group came in contact with German producer  Peter Wustmann, who proposed  to CdC to make a record . So the group tried to become more conventional adding Silvia Marton as a singer. For the record sessions played also: Mauro Beggio drums (he played jazz with  Enrico Rava), Alex de Rosso guitars (he played in the hard rock gtoup  Dokken) and Consuelo Marcon  violin.  But their second official album,  commissioned in 1994 by Peter Wustmann's label Music Is Intelligence,  due to financial problems , was only released in 2000 on CD by Italian label Mellow Records. The CD titled  'Blue Forms'  had anyhow a good critical response.

In 2018 the French label Hybride Sentimento contacted Andrea Desiderà to reissue their debut album, so “Skies in the Mirror” had its first vinyl release. 

In 2021 the group reformed with the members Gian Luigi Morosin, Andrea Desiderà and Giorgio Ricci and released the LP "The Breath of Infinity" for Quindi Records. After 27 years, this record aspires to reveal once and for all the musical uniqueness of this project. Its roots lie in the avant-garde ethno of the 70s crossing subsequent genres such as New Age, Techno-Ambient and Leftfield, and reaching a totally contemporary sound."The Breath of Infinity" includes new works recorded during former year, some are totally new, other are based on reworks of old ideas with the assistance of Giorgio Ricci. Morosin's and Desiderà’s natural instincts as multi-instrumentalists shine  across the record as already in "Skies in the Mirror". Although these tracks were in fact composed as raw live takes using electronic workstations (with a little additional fretless bass provided by the unforgettable close friend Giampaolo Diacci  R.I.P. on the tracks “Different Suns” and “Climatic Variations”). There is a crisp, digital timbre to the worlds Cabaret du Ciel shape out on "The Breath Of Infinity", utopian pastures with an air of optimism similarly expressed by the first waves of ambient electronica. Folk traditions exert a guiding influence on the sparkling, ethereal melodies and full-frequency harmonization. This music moves on timeless plateaus rather than repeating hackneyed interpretations of the past, present or future.Cabaret du Ciel emphasize the musicality in their electronic music, shaping out an evocative, imaginative environment to idly glide through or attentively explore.

In Summer 2021 Altrimenti Records, the label of Ledx team, has been  revisiting the illustrious musicality of Cabaret Du Ciel’s The Breath Of Infinity LP with a thoughtfully balanced trio of remixers. They enriched and explored CdC tracks. Italian techno figurehead Donato Dozzy, Dukwa and SSIEGE Aero offer a wistful strain of playful, ambient electronica. Three distinct approaches on a varied pool of source material, and yet feeling more like an intentional release in its own right.What binds these tracks together is the rich, melodious quality of the source material. Cabaret Du Ciel’s bold, iridescent synth lines inform a common embrace of harmonious tones and warm, emotionally open moods among the assembled artists, creating a balanced and yet highly varied EP.
